Every 2 minutes there is a house fire in Germany & Austria!
6 Everyday Causes of Fires in Your Home – and How to Avoid Them
1.) Cooking accidents are the most common cause of fire
One of the most common causes of fires in the home is cooking. Oil that overheats can quickly ignite, and forgotten hotplates can easily lead to dangerous situations. Make sure to always stay close when cooking and turn everything off before leaving the house. A smoke alarm near the kitchen provides additional safety by providing early warning.
2.) Defective or overloaded electrical devices
Old or poorly maintained electrical appliances, such as toasters or kettles, can overheat and create sparks. Overloaded power strips are also particularly dangerous. Make sure to check electrical appliances regularly and only use approved extension cables to avoid overloading.
3.) Candles and open fire
Candles may be romantic, but they can quickly become dangerous, especially if they are left burning unattended or near flammable objects. Always use candles on stable surfaces and extinguish them before leaving the room.
4.) Smoking in the house
Carelessness when smoking, such as throwing lit cigarettes into the wastepaper basket or smoking in bed, is one of the most common causes of fatal house fires. A smoke detector in the bedroom and living room can be a life-saver here, as it sounds the alarm early.
5.) Heaters and open fireplaces
Electric heaters or poorly maintained fireplaces can easily start fires if they are placed too close to furniture or curtains. Make sure heaters are at least three feet away from flammable materials and have fireplaces checked regularly by a professional.
6.) Defective or unattended Christmas lights
Especially during the Christmas season, the risk of fire from defective fairy lights or overloaded sockets increases. Make sure that fairy lights are in perfect condition and switch them off when you leave the house or go to sleep.
