Smoke Detectors - General Questions

Are ALPENLUFT smoke detectors quality tested?

When it comes to fire protection, there can be no compromises! ALPENLUFT smoke detectors undergo rigorous quality testing. Our devices are TÜV Rheinland certified (test mark number 1111280065) and CE tested according to EU standard EN14604. With ALPENLUFT, you are purchasing reliable safety!

What are the advantages of an optical sensor

Our smoke detectors have a highly sensitive optical sensor that recognises smoke particles in the air by using optical (light) signals. This technology is used in so-called photoelectric smoke detectors.

How it works:

  1. Integrated light source: There is a light source inside the smoke detector that emits light in a specific direction.
  2. Reflection by smoke particles: When smoke enters the smoke chamber of the detector, the smoke particles scatter or reflect the light.
  3. Detection by sensor: An optical sensor recognises the scattered light beams. As soon as a certain amount of light is detected, the smoke detector triggers an alarm.

Advantages of optical sensors:

  • They react quickly to smouldering fires where there is a lot of smoke but little flame.
  • Suitable for living areas such as bedrooms and hallways.
  • They are less susceptible to false alarms caused by steam or cooking odours compared to ionisation smoke detectors.

How loud are the detectors in the event of an alarm?

The volume of our detectors is over 85 dB.

We therefore strongly recommend wearing hearing protection when carrying out a test alarm.

What smoke detector models do you offer?

Our smoke detectors are available in 2 versions:

Interlinked:

With the  ALPENLUFT Smoke & Heat Detector Interlinked up to 30 detectors  can be integrated into a network. With this model, you can also switch between Smoke and Heat Mode (ideal for kitchens, bathrooms or rooms with smoke or vapour development).

Networking can be carried out directly on the devices or with the handy ALPENLUFT remote control.

Standalone:

The ALPENLUFT Standalone Smoke Detector variant cannot be networked. These detectors do not transmit an alarm to other devices..

How many detectors do I need?

To begin with, you should equip all bedrooms and connecting corridors. An alarm should be installed in every bedroom.

Install an alarm in the stairwell and on each floor of the house.

If the area to be monitored is larger than 60 m², you must install several smoke alarms.

Please note that our Smoke Detector Standalone model should not be installed in areas with high humidity, e.g. in bathrooms, garages or kitchens, to avoid false alarms.

Our Smoke & Heat Detector Interlinked can be operated in both Smoke and Heat Mode. In heat mode, high humidity is not a problem.

Does the LED on the detector blink regularly? Are the smoke detectors suitable for bedrooms?

The LED does not flash in Standard Mode. This is why our smoke detectors are also suitable for bedrooms.

In Sleep Mode (after an alarm), the LED flashes every 8 seconds. The smoke detector automatically resets to Standard Mode after 10 minutes.

Can ALPENLUFT smoke detectors be integrated into a Wi-Fi network and controlled via an app?

Currently, we do not offer a model with app support.

The smoke detectors are designed to be used in rooms without Wi-Fi reception, such as basements or garages.

Therefore, they cannot be connected to a mobile phone or accessed through an app.

What is the EU standard for smoke detectors?

The EU standard for smoke detectors is EN 14604. This standard specifies the requirements, test methods, and performance characteristics for the design and function of smoke detectors used in residential buildings and similar applications.

What does a 10-year battery in a smoke detector mean?

Our smoke detectors are powered by a non-replaceable 10-year battery. It is included and already installed in the device. The battery has a lifespan of 10 years, which corresponds to the maximum legally required lifespan of smoke detectors.

This means you don’t need to worry about regular battery changes. After the 10-year battery life expires, the smoke detector must be fully replaced in accordance with the law.

What happens after the 10-year battery life?

After the 10-year battery life expires, the smoke detector must be fully replaced in accordance with the law.

Can I also install the detectors in rooms with high humidity?

To avoid false alarms, our Smoke Detector Standalone model should not be installed in areas with high humidity, e.g. in bathrooms, garages or kitchens.

Our Smoke & Heat Detector Interlinked can be operated in both Smoke and Heat Mode. High humidity is not a problem in heat mode.

Do the detectors require a specific ambient temperature to function correctly?

We recommend a temperature range between 0°C and around 40°C.

At temperatures below 0°C, the detector may trigger false alarms or the battery could be damaged.

What is Sleep Mode?

If the detector is in alarm status, you can stop the alarm for 10 minutes by pressing the test button. The red LED indicator now flashes every 8 seconds, which means that the alarm is in Sleep Mode.

The Sleep Mode function may only be used if a deliberate false alarm (see next paragraph) has been triggered. The smoke detector resets itself automatically after 10 minutes. If there are still combustion particles in the air after this period, the alarm will be triggered again.

A false alarm can be triggered by dust, cooking vapours or other non-hazardous sources.

Please also refer to the operating instructions for the interlinked and models.

Can a false alarm be triggered by cigarettes, shishas or vapes?

Our smoke alarms also react to smoke from cigarettes, shishas and vapes.

The smoke from burning cigarettes and the vapour from shisha contains small particles that can trigger the operation of smoke alarms.

The same applies to vapes, although the risk is lower than with cigarette or shisha smoke. Vape vapour contains fewer soot and ash particles, as it essentially consists of vaporised liquid and does not contain combustion products such as tobacco smoke. Nevertheless, in large quantities and in small, poorly ventilated rooms, vapes can also cause an alarm.

Whether an alarm is actually triggered also depends on the amount and concentration of cigarette smoke. Heavy, dense smoke in a small room is very likely to exceed the sensitivity threshold. Low levels of smoke or larger, well-ventilated rooms often do not trigger an alarm.

However, you can avoid this with our Smoke & Heat Detector Interlinked model, by operating it in Heat Mode.

Heat Mode is intended for rooms such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages or rooms with a fireplace, where smoke or vapour would otherwise trigger a false alarm.

You can find more information about heat mode here:
What is the purpose of Heat Mode?

What is the purpose of Heat Mode?

Our Standalone Smoke Detector model should not be installed in areas with high humidity, e.g. in bathrooms, garages or kitchens, otherwise false alarms may be triggered.

Our Smoke & Heat Detector Interlinked can be operated in both Smoke and Heat Mode.

In Heat Mode, high humidity is not a problem.

The heat sensitivity is approx. 54~72℃, above which an alarm is triggered. It is difficult to specify an exact value here, which is why we can only specify the trigger temperature in this range.

You can switch between Smoke and Heat Mode at any time.

To switch between Smoke and Heat Mode, please press the test button three times. If the detector has already been mounted on the ceiling, you can also use a broomstick to do this.

Activate Smoke Alarm

  • The LED flashes red once: Smoke Mode has been activated.
  • The LED flashes 1x green: Heat Mode has been activated.

Please also watch the following video:

Can the smoke detectors be tested with test gas?

Yes, our smoke detectors can be tested with test gas.

What is the RAL color code of the smoke detectors?

Our smoke detectors have the RAL color code "9003 Signal White".

Smoke Detectors - Installation & Function Test

How do I install a smoke detector?

Each smoke detector should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. In principle, smoke detectors should be installed on the ceiling and preferably in the centre of a room. In the case of networked smoke detectors, it must also be ensured that all devices are properly connected to each other.

Please also refer to the operating instructions for the Interlinked and Standalone models.

Where and at what distance should I install the smoke alarms?

Smoke, flames and heat spread horizontally once they have risen to the ceiling. Therefore, install the detector in the centre of the ceiling.

If the detector cannot be installed in the centre of the ceiling, install it 300 mm from the corners.

If the alarm is installed on the side wall, it should be positioned 100mm from the ceiling.

If the area to be monitored is larger than 60m², you must install several smoke detectors. Please mount the detectors 150cm apart.

If the wall or ceiling is sloping, the alarm must be installed at least 500mm from the highest point in the room.

Please also refer to the operating instructions for the Interlinked and Standalone models.

Should I opt for mounting with adhesive strips or screws?

We only recommend mounting with adhesive strips if the surface of your wall is suitable. If the adhesive strips do not hold reliably, we would recommend fixing with screws, as the detectors could be damaged or trigger a false alarm if they fall off the wall.

The utensils required for both types of installation are included in the scope of delivery.

Please also refer to the operating instructions for the Interlinked and Standalone models.

What distances do the drill holes need to be if I want to fasten my detector with screws?

The mounting plate of our detectors has a diameter of 12 cm.

The distance between the drill holes in the mounting plate is 6.9 cm - 7.1 cm, as the recess has a slotted shape:

Can the smoke detectors be fitted with a magnetic holder?

Although our detectors are designed for adhesive or drill mounting, they can also be attached using a magnetic holder. In this case, the detector should then be glued to the magnetic disc.

However, as these discs are not specially made for our smoke detectors, we cannot guarantee that the discs will hold and accept no liability in the event of damage.

Magnetic holders are not included in the scope of delivery.

How do I switch the detectors on and off?

To switch the smoke detector on and off, press and hold the test button for approx. 10 seconds.

Rauchmelder Testfläche

You can also do this with a broomstick, for example, if the detector is in an elevated position.

Sometimes the devices need a little longer than the 10 seconds described to switch on. In this case, we would ask you to keep the test button pressed for up to 30 seconds.

How often should I test my smoke alarms?

The smoke alarms test themselves silently every 60 seconds. However, it is recommended that you test your smoke alarms at least once a month to ensure that they are working properly.

You can find out how to carry out a test alarm here:

How do I carry out a test alarm?

Does the smoke detector have a test button? Where is it located?

The entire surface of the detector is the test button. Press and hold it to perform various functions.

Rauchmelder Testfläche

How do I carry out a test alarm?

Please make sure you wear hearing protection during the test, otherwise your hearing may be damaged!

Press the test button of the switched-on smoke detector once.

The test alarm will now sound twice.

Please also watch the following chapter in our networking video. There you can see how a test alarm is carried out:

How can I remove a smoke detector?

You can easily remove the detector by turning it carefully to the left. You may have to turn it a little harder to disengage the detector.

Smoke & Heat Detectors - Radio Networking

How many smoke detectors can I network?

You can connect up to 30 devices of our Smoke & Heat Detector in one network.

If you would like to operate more devices, you can easily create several networks.

Please also watch the following video:

How does the wireless connection work with smoke detectors?

Radio-networked smoke detectors communicate with each other wirelessly. If a detector detects smoke and sounds the alarm, it sends a signal to the other detectors in the network, which also sound the alarm. This ensures that all residents in the house are warned, regardless of their position.

What range do the wirelessly networked detectors have?

The range is up to 100 metres, depending on the wall. However, it is not possible to make an exact statement about the range, as different materials have different permeability.

However, you can check this by carrying out a test with the detectors. You have a 14-day right of return.

How often and on which frequency band do the smoke detectors communicate with each other?

The smoke detectors only communicate with each other via the 433 MHz frequency in the event of an alarm.

How do I know which device the alarm is coming from if I have several networked smoke detectors?

In the event of an alarm, you can easily locate the ‘source’ smoke detector from which the alarm originates. This emits its own alarm tone, which can be clearly distinguished from the other detectors. As soon as you mute it, the alarm is also silenced on all other devices.

You can find out exactly how to do this in the user manual under ‘Sleep mode’.

How do I network several smoke detectors together?

Follow the instructions in the user manual under ‘Linking the smoke detectors’.

Networking is also explained in detail in this video:

How do I network the detectors via remote control?

You can also network our Smoke & Heat Detector Interlinked via remote control

You can find instructions on how to do this in the user manual under ‘’Linking the smoke detectors: Method 2 - via remote control‘’.

Please also watch this video:

Can I use several remote controls for one network?

No, you can only connect one remote control per network.

Do I have to reconnect the detectors after switching off/restarting?

No, new networking is not necessary after switching off.

How can I remove a smoke detector from the network?

To remove a new smoke detector from the network, press the test button on the smoke detector twice in quick succession.

The green LED flashes for 60 seconds. The connection is then automatically disconnected. See also the following chapter in our networking video:

How do I switch between Smoke & Heat Mode?

Our Smoke & Heat Detector Interlinked model has 2 operating modes:

  • Smoke Mode
  • Heat Mode

The Heat Mode is intended for rooms such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages or rooms with a fireplace, where smoke or vapour would otherwise trigger a false alarm.

Simultaneous operation in Smoke and Heat Mode is not possible. You can easily switch between Smoke and Heat Mode by pressing the test button three times.
If the detectors are mounted high up on the ceiling, you can also do this with a broomstick.

If the detector then flashes red once, it is in Smoke Mode, if it flashes green once, it is in Heat Mode.

Smoke Detectors - Troubleshooting

My smoke alarm beeps for unknown reasons

Are the smoke detectors installed in a very cold room? Then it may happen that the smoke detector thinks the battery is empty at very low temperatures and gives a warning message.

It may also be that the error was triggered due to dirt or insects that enter the smoke detector and disturb its sensors.

Clean the smoke detector with a dry cloth or carefully vacuum it with a vacuum cleaner.

If this does not resolve the error, please contact us via email at office@alpenluft.org. We will be happy to assist you.

The LED on my detector blinks 8 times. What does that mean?

In Sleep Mode (after an alarm), the LED flashes every 8 seconds. The smoke detector automatically resets to Standard Mode after 10 minutes.

What should I do if my smoke detector triggers a false alarm?

If the detector is in alarm status, you can stop the alarm for 10 minutes by pressing the test button. The red LED indicator now flashes every 8 seconds, which means that the alarm is in Sleep Mode. The Sleep Mode function may only be used if a deliberate false alarm (see next paragraph) has been triggered. The smoke alarm resets automatically after 10 minutes. If there are still combustion particles in the air after this period, the alarm will be triggered again.

A false alarm can be triggered by dust, cooking vapours or other non-hazardous sources.

If the false alarm was triggered by known causes such as smoke or vapour (chimney, kitchen, bathroom or similar), you can switch our Smoke & Heat Detector Interlinked to Heat Mode to avoid this problem.

Please also refer to the operating instructions for the Interlinked and Standalone models.
